Google Group or email list for your closed test?
Updated October 2026
Every closed testing track needs a list of who may install the app. Play Console gives you two options: an email list you manage in Play Console, or a Google Group. Both work for the 12-tester requirement. The difference is how much work it is to add people.
Tester Exchange works with both: testers get your group link in their task list, or you copy their emails into your list with one click.Find testers free
Quick comparison
- Google Group: anyone with the group link can join, so you don't have to add people one by one. Best when testers come from many places.
- Email list: you paste each tester's Google account email into Play Console. Full control over who gets in, but you have to keep it updated as people join.
Set up a Google Group
- Go to groups.google.com and create a group. Set "Who can join" to anyone on the web, so testers don't wait for approval.
- In Play Console → Testing → Closed testing → your track → Testers, choose Google Groups and add the group's email address.
- Share two links with testers: the group link (join first) and the opt-in link (become a tester).
- Testers install the app from Google Play with the same Google account they used to join the group.
Set up an email list
- In Play Console → Testing → Closed testing → your track → Testers, create an email list.
- Paste the Google account emails of your testers, separated by commas, and save.
- Share the opt-in link. Testers must open it while signed in with the email you added.
Mistakes that stop testers from seeing your app
- The tester joined with one Google account but their phone's Play Store uses another.
- The group requires approval, so testers are stuck waiting.
- The tester joined the group but never opened the opt-in link and tapped "Become a tester".
- The release isn't approved yet. Testers can't install until the closed track is live.
Frequently asked questions
Do group members count toward the 12 testers?
Only people who opted in through the opt-in link count, whichever list type you use.
Can I use both?
Yes. A track can have email lists and Google Groups at the same time.
Can testers stay anonymous?
With a Google Group you never need to collect emails yourself. With an email list you need each tester's Google account email.
